Transgender inequality is becoming the new civil rights movement in America today. However gays, lesbians, and transgenders are gaining their civil rights a lot quicker now that Americans realized that some of their relatives and friends are gay. Nicholas Kristof creates the same effect on the readers by appealing to pathos and logos. Bruce Jenner is like family, transgender or straight, he has adorned Wheaties boxes and inspired children. Of course, not all of Kristof's audience agrees with his liberal point of view. The author lists examples of the hate crimes against gay people to reflect on that. In one example, he uses is the story of Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old gay student in Wyoming, who was tied to a fence, badly beaten, and left to die. Kristof appeals to logos using a 2011 survey by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force that 57 percent of transgender people interviewed reported family rejection. The author wants to change America's point of view to pro-gay as he concludes his article asking Wheaties to put Bruce Jenner back on the box.
